August 23 – Dreyfus Affair, a 19th Century “Trial of the Century”

The Mary Leonard Law Society and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Silver

present an engaging discussion of the

Dreyfus Affair, a 19th Century “Trial of the Century

When: August 23 – 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m

Where: Willamette College of Law, Room 201

In 1894, the French army discovered that secrets had been leaked to the Germans by one of the Army’s own. A flawed, flimsy investigation focused on Captain Alfred Dreyfus.  Fueled by the fact that Dreyfus was Jewish, arrangements were made to covertly provide ex parte evidence to the military tribunal at the 11th hour in order to ensure a guilty verdict.  Led by Mathieu Dreyfus and Emile Zola, a dedicated group of “Dreyfusards” fought to exonerate Dreyfus.
Termed the “Dreyfus Affair,” the proceedings created a civil rights scandal that divided France and riveted the world.  The Affair’s lasting legacy of closed military tribunals and secret evidence resonates to this day.
