A Celebration of the Freedom Riders: the 50th Anniversary

The Mary Leonard Law Society Presents:

A Celebration of the Freedom Riders: the 50th Anniversary
Ron Silver, US DOJ

Following the 1960 USSC decision of Boynton v. Virginia, civil rights activists sought to bring attention to the still prevalent local segregationist customs and laws overturned by Boynton. In May, 1961 the Freedom Riders boarded public bus transportation in Washington, D.C., determined to reach New Orleans as integrated travelers.  Brutal, police sanctioned mob violence in Alabama, followed by mass arrests in Mississippi, focused national spotlight on the civil rights movement and forced the Justice Department to finally seek an end to segregated interstate transportation.

Please join us as Ron Silver, Civil Chief for the US Attorney’s office in Portland, presents the historical events of 1961, and recounts his own recent experiences at the 50th anniversary celebration for the Freedom Riders in Mississippi.
